Connections and Reconnections

Tuesday, February/febrero 18, 2014

WARNING:  This is a LONG post.  So, please grab yourself a cup of coffee, tea, water, or whatever rocks your world-even a snack if you need it!

What I love about the ministry is the amazing experiences.  For instance, on Tuesday we went to the Fatima bario (neighborhood) of Leon with the friends you see in the photo below.

Front buddies:  Sergio, Sergito, Mariella, Fanny, Matilda
Cutie in the back:  Jacquelyn

Here in Leon English "territory" is different than in the States.  When we do the search work and find people who speak English, they're written down-what side of the block he/she lives on, what color the house is, which block number of the territory card it is, etc, (See below)
Then, when another group returns to the area, we specifically look for those people who speak English, using all the helpful information the other friends have gathered.  You may wonder: "Why don't you just look for addresses and streets?"  There are no consistent addresses or streets!  Bills are delivered with directions like, "2 blocks west of Guadalupe Park" or "1 1/2 blocks north of Central Park."  Comprendo?  Tangent over-back to my story.
Matilda was my service partner, and we were assigned block 7.  We were confused and asked a guard for help, which he did-in some English!  We talked with him for probably 10-15 minutes. He was
given an English meeting invitation and a set of magazines in Spanish.  Cool right?  It gets even better-he also gave us his address and phone number so someone can visit him at his house!
We went to a house and asked for the English speaker.  We were invited inside by her employee and waited for her boss, who is very Catholic-and made it clear that she wouldn't change.  She was very passionate about her beliefs and was upset at all the other "Christian" religions.  I tried to get on common ground by talking about the Kingdom she prays for in the Our Father prayer.  However, she asked me what religion we are.  'Testigos de Jehova,' I answered.  'No, no, no, no, no,' (or to that effect) and was even more upset and passionate.  What do I do now?  I asked Jehovah for help to know what to do.  I had noticed her pictures earlier but looked at them again at this point.  The pictures were of her daughter and her.  She then told us that her only daughter-her only child-died 2 years ago at 23 of a heart attack!  She's obviously still misses her, but almost as instantly as she started talking about her, the whole atmosphere changed.  She became calmer and opened up to us.  She even allowed me to share 2 Corinthians 1:3, 4, which she appreciated.  She herself is experiencing heart problems and other illnesses.  We exchanged e-mails, and she had had prepared for us some te frio rico (delicious iced tea-please don't roll your eyes, my British friends.  It's not an oxymoron:)  I thank Jehovah for His help with this potentially explosive situation!
Now for the reconnections.  The last time I was in Nicaragua, I met a teenage girl who was visiting her grandparents in Leon.  Her name is Celeste.  We had a nice conversation, and she took a tract.  On returning the next day, she liked what she read and believed it was the truth!  Now, before you get too excited, she already had some contact with the Witnesses, like her other grandma is one of Jehovah's Witnesses and her mom was studying-close to baptism!  Celeste had already decided that she did not want to be Catholic anymore.  She lives in Managua and returned there not too long after our conversation.  I lost contact with her. This time around I went back to her grandparents' house here in Leon and met her aunt, who gave me her cell number.  Our silly phone didn't let me send her a text right away, but I tried again a couple of weeks later and it worked!  She quickly texted back and said that she had been waiting for my message!  She's studying with a sister in the congregation-I'm waiting to hear more from her.
Lastly-I promise-mi amiga, Hazel, and I went to the Eskimo for ice cream after a tiring day (seriously this whole account was Tuesday).  The same sweet girl who worked there over a year ago was still working there.  Mayer-who's in the picture below-remembered me and was excited to see me as I was excited to see her!  Now, our conversations have to be translated because my Spanish is muy poquito (very little) and her English is the same.  I left her something to read on the last trip, and hope to do something more with her this time!
So, how was your beverage and snack?  It may be time for your next meal;)  Thanks again for your ear and time!

Preaching in the Hospital.

Hello!
I went to the hospital the last friday with a sister (we were not sick) we went there to help the people who are sicks, but not only phisically, also spiritually ill.
The name of the sister that went with me is Sofia (like me), she has around 10 years of been pionner and she gives the magazines to the doctors and nurses.

Sister Sofia presenting the magazines the nurses.

I was astonished when Sofia told me that the prisioners came to the hospital with the police officers (I tought that they had a private clinic or something). We saw 2 police officers and a prisioner in the hospital so I asked Sofia If we could talk to them. She said that would be great, that she loves talk to them, but we had to wait that they would be near of us, because they were waiting for the doctor.
Afterwards we went to the Delivery room, where the pregnants were waiting for their turn, sister Sofia had some of the new brochers, so she gave one of a woman.
Sister Sofia giving a brochure.
I was behind her, in that moment came the prisioners and the police officers (I was really nervous, I was alone!) But well, I take a tract from my backpack (Who Really Controls The World?) and I told to a police:
Me: I know that you are working right now, but I would like to give you this information that has a interesting and important question.
Police: (He took it) Ok, thank you.
Me: The answer it is inside of this information, the answer it is in 1 John 5:19, Who is the most evil people in the world? -I asked him.
Police: Satan!
Me: Yes, he is! And that's what the Bible says! Actually, If he wouldn't control the world right now, your job wouldn't exist! -I said in a humorous way.
Police: (He laught) Yes, that's right! It sounds interesting!

Then sister Sofia came, and she asked him If she would give magazines to the prisioners, he said that it was ok.
One of the prisioners said that one brother goes to the jail to visit him, so Sofia give one pair of magazines to the other prisioner. Then we saw the first prisioner that was explaining to the other things about the magazines!

If you ever have the opportunity to preach where ever you go, do not hesitate, do it! You are going to have amazing experiences!

Thanks for reading!

The Best Possible Decision

February 6, 2014
So this week during the Theocratic Ministry School, we have a new publisher to welcome to the school! Annie you did so awesome and we are all very proud of you!
I didn't get a picture, but we had two interviews during the Service Meeting.
The first was Mariela who went to Guatemala on the Pioneer Route. She said that many of the people she was talking to did not even know God's name was Jehovah, and that they were so happy to know this. She is looking forward to going back and said that there is much work to be done.
The second interview was our new sister Mery who was just baptized this past weekend. She is the only witness in her family and does experience family opposition. Why did she get baptized? She felt that she needed to have a relationship with Jehovah and that she definitely could not picture her life without him. A few of the many goals were to reach as many as possible in her ministry so that they could learn what she has been learning, to Auxiliary Pioneer, to Regular Pioneer, and to go to Bethel. A direct quote, "I want to show my family that this is the best decision I have ever made in my life."
We love all of these girls tremendously and this trip would not be the same without them. I am proud of their decision to serve Jehovah for the rest of their life.

This Season's Must-Have Accessory...

January 30, 2014
Jacquelyn, Marta, Jasmin, and Renee with the Bible that
brought us together

Marta, Jasmin, and Nick

On our customized service day, Jacquelyn and I visited a second hand clothing store (don't judge :) )  After making our purchases (which can also be seen on this blog site), this woman in purple stopped me with a big grin on her face.  You guessed it, she was a sister!  She saw my "silver sword"-the Aussie term for our revised Bible-and knew we were sisters.  Then, we met Jasmin's husband, Nick, and her mama, Marta. And if you're sitting down, we found out that Jasmin and Nick live in Indiana!  She's originally from Nicaragua and is visiting her mama, who lives here.  Jehovah's people can find each other like a needle in a haystack.  He served in Nicaragua before, met her, got married, and now serve in a Spanish congregation together in Indiana and Nicaragua.  Happy, happy, happy!

Never forget to share.

My best friend told me about her experience.
I will tell you which one was.

One day my friend Gema was taking a consignment, the place was full and she started to feel frustrated.
Well, time is end, she got the consigment, and now she is in a store, she realized that she has not her phone with her, her phone was stolen. In that moment Isidro (a brother from our congregation) saw her and he asked her what happened, she told him the story and he answer: I will give you the money to your phone, because you are a pioneer and pioneers need to keep in touch.
She did not accept it. I will tell you why.
Isidro was an electrician and he has an accident, he lost his legs and arms, he has protesis.
He afford his costs from the employment benefict.
So Isidro went to Gema's house and give to her the money, she said no again she told him that he need that money, but he answered: "I do not matter If you do not want accept it, you have to".
Today I went to the ministry with Isidro and he told me the story, he told me: "If I can share what I have, I do it, even more with whose that made sacrifices for Jehovah"
He is an exemplary man for me, he is auxiliar pionner, and his dream is go to the pioneer school.
That teach me something: NEVER FORGET TO SHARE.

From left to right: Me, Dionicio. Isidro.
